USEFUL INFORMATION

Local Transportation

Buenos Aires has a large, efficient public transport network, almost 40,000 licensed taxis, a hop-on, hop-off sightseeing bus, and a vast network of cycle lanes. To travel by bus or subte (underground metro) in Buenos Aires, you’ll need to get a rechargeable SUBE travel card and charge it with credit. SUBE cards are available at subte stations, at our eight Tourist Assistance Centers and at many “kioskos” (corner shops selling confectionary and tobacco) throughout the city. Cards can be charged with credit at all subte stations, national lottery outlets, and at some kioskos with automated terminals. To find your nearest point of sale, the SUBE website has a map of SUBE vendors.

Health

Buenos Aires is a safe, modern city with high police presence and good quality health provision. There are no major health risks in the city and visitors can rest assured that outbreaks of zika in more tropical areas of South America have not affected temperate Buenos Aires. No vaccinations are required for entry into Argentina. Tap water is drinkable in the city. Public hospitals are open 24 hours a day and attend patients free of charge. For an ambulance, call the free number 107 24 hours a day. There is a wide network of pharmacies throughout the city with coverage in every neighbourhood. Many open at night and every pharmacy displays a list showing coverage. A prescription from a public hospital or private clinic will be needed to obtain prescri ption-only medicines.

Security

Like with any large metropolis, petty crime and theft does exist, and visitors should always take precautions, particularly in tourist hot spots and crowded places. We recommend keeping your belongings with you at all times, taking licensed taxis, and ensuring your bags or rucksacks are kept closed. Stick to well-lit streets in the evenings and keep “bling” to a minimum. If you have an emergency, call 911. For other issues, the following services will be happy to help you:

Tourist Ombudsman (Defensoría del Turista)

If you suffer from any type of abuse, mistreatment or discrimination during your visit, please contact the Defensoría de Turista, the public office responsible for defending the rights of tourists. The office is located in the Museo de Bellas Artes “Benito Quinquela Martín”, on Av. Pedro de Mendoza 1835 (La Boca). Opening times are 10.00-18.00, Monday to Sunday. Phone:  +54 11 4302-7816, email: turista@defensoria.org.ar. You can also visit any one of the Tourist Assistance Centers in Recoleta or Puerto Madero.

Tourist Police (Comisaría del Turista)

The Tourist Police Station assists with missing persons, lost items and victims of theft and other crimes. The office will also help tourists contact their local embassies or consulates. Interpretation is available in English, Portuguese, French, Italian and Japanese. The address  is Av. Corrientes 436. Tel. +54 9 11 5050 3293 / 9260. Email: serv.turista@gmail.com

CURRENCY

Argentina’s national currency is the Argentine peso. Note that it has the same symbol ($) as the US dollar and other dollar currencies (don’t be confused – prices expressed using the $ symbol are in Argentine pesos unless stated otherwise. US dollars are usually referred to using the symbol: U$S. Most hotels and many large shops and other businesses accept payment by card but note that some smaller businesses may only accept cash. It is easy to obtain local currency in Buenos Aires at casas de cambio (bureaux de change/currency exchanges) and at most banks – note that you’ll need to provide ID when changing money. Local currency can also be obtained from cash machines (ATMs) throughout the city. Cash machines operate 24 hours a day and accept all major international cards. In various businesses and even in the street in the city’s central financial area, particularly on
Calle Florida, you are likely to come across people offering to exchance money. Please note that while non-official operators may state a preferential rate of exchange, these money changers are illegal and for visitors’ safety, we recommend changing money only at legal regulated institutions. We recommend changing only small amounts of money at a time. You should also keep the receipt from your transaction as you may need to show this if you wish to change money back to your original currency at the end of the trip. Please note that should you wish to change back any leftover Argentine pesos at the end of your trip, you will be limited to changing only up to the equivalent of US$100 in cash.

CLIMATE

With average temperatures of around 18ºC (64°F), Buenos Aires is blessed with a temperate and sunny climate, making it a great destination at any time of the year. Spring and autumn are the rainiest seasons. Rains tend to be light and don’t get in the way of activities but you may want to bring a raincoat or umbrella.

Clothing: Mid-season attire: short-sleeved shirts, jeans, you can wear skirts and dresses, but with tights and maybe a sweater.
Jackets: It can be a denim or fabric jacket, or a trench coat might work well. You’ll wear them mostly in the mornings and evenings. A raincoat might be handy in case it rains.
Footwear: Comfortable shoes that you’ve already worn before. Short boots and sneakers. Something waterproof, like rain boots, could also be useful.
Long pants: These can be jeans, chinos, or leggings.
Accessories: Bring a small umbrella that you can store in your backpack, just in case.
